Duke's Contemporary and Improvisational Dance Community

Founded in 2020, Embodiment Contemporary Dance was born out of a desire for a space to connect with others through contemporary dance. We strive to provide a community for dancers who are passionate about finding their own voice in movement through improvisation, choreography, classes with guest teachers, and more. Our core values are

INTRODUCING OUR FINAL NEWBIE!

Carmen is a freshman from Miami, Florida, planning to major in biomedical engineering. She’s been dancing since she was 4 but have competitively trained at her studio Dancetown for the last 10 years. As part of Embodiment, she is so excited to make connections and to keep dancing because she loves it so much!!!

INTRODUCING OUR NEXT NEWBIE!!!

Michela Arietti is a junior from Milan, Italy, doing Program II in Embodied Resilience, studying how Movement Practices and Nutrition engender or heal trauma through Neuroscience. She started studying at La Scala Theater’s Ballet School, and later at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow. She graduated from the former’s affiliated school in 2022 with a diploma in ballet and a concentration in contemporary floorwork. During her time at Duke, she has been exploring other forms of dance outside of ballet, with a special focus on de-institutionalized practices and social choreography. As part of Embodiment, she is most excited to have the opportunity to contribute body, mind, and soul to this amazing art form alongside people equally as passionate.

INTRODUCING OUR NEXT NEWBIE!

Naomi is a freshman from Rockville, Maryland, planning to double major in biology and dance. She began dancing at 3 years old, continued on to dance with Citydance Conservatory (2016-2024) and became an alum in 2024. She trained in Vagonova styled ballet, graham and Horton modern, Afro-pop, jazz, contemporary, and umfundali dance styles. She also participated in Alvin Ailey summer 23’ and Joffrey ballet summer 22’. As part of Embodiment, she is so excited to perform with the group for the first time and to create new and innovative movement !

INTRODUCING OUR NEXT NEWBIE!!!

Anna Grace is a freshman from Boone, North Carolina, planning to double major in biomedical engineering and computer science. She grew up dancing at a small studio called The Space @ Project Dance, where she trained mainly in ballet, contemporary, modern, and jazz. In highschool, she was on her studio’s competition team and traveled to conventions/intensives with her sister. Additionally, she was part of a precision dance company in her hometown, where she got to perform pieces choreographed by a Rockette in a Christmas show every year. She is most excited to push herself as a dancer and to be surrounded by other people who have the same passions as her. She has loved her experience so far and looks forward to Sunday class every week!

INTRODUCING OUR NEXT NEWBIE!!!

Hannah is a freshman from Bedford, New York, planning to double major in Chemistry and Dance. She has been dancing since she was 3 years old, and she started competing in 2nd grade. She has trained primarily in Ballet, Pointe, Contemporary, Lyrical, and Jazz, but she also loves taking classes in Hip-Hop and Tap. Dance has always been such a huge part of her life, and she cannot wait to continue her training here at Duke!! She is so excited to be a part of the amazing community that Embodiment builds and to be able to learn from her insanely talented peers in such a collaborative environment. In addition, she looks forward to being able to grow her artistry more through improvisation and eventually creating her own pieces!

INTRODUCING OUR NEXT NEWBIE!!!

Julia is a freshman from Miami, Florida, planning to double major in public policy and dance. She studied at Miami City Ballet for 5 years before attending New World School of the Arts and continuing her dance training there. She is most excited for the choreography opportunities that Embodiment has to offer, as well as the opportunity to meet so many incredible people with the same passion and love for dance that she has.

Imani is a freshman from Bronx, NY. She is double majoring in computer science and math. She has trained at The Ailey School and Broadway Dance Center in modern, ballet, commercial styles, and more. On Embodiment, Imani is looking forward to learning from her peers and exchanging artistry! WE LOVE YOU IMANI!

INTRODUCING OUR NEXT NEWBIE!!!

Tate is a first-year from Los Altos, CA. She is majoring in Economics with a MMS certificate. She’s been dancing since she was two years old and started competing in fourth grade. Dance quickly became her passion, and she had the privilege of being on her high school Varsity dance team from freshman through senior year. She’s grateful for the opportunity to experience both studio dance and school performances/rallies, where she could experiment with her movement while also proudly representing her school. On Embodiment, Tate is most excited to keep growing both as an artist and an individual, and make connections with others who share the same love for the art as she does! WE LOVE YOU TATE! 😘

Amare is a sophomore from Missoula, Montana. She is an International Comparative Studies and Dance double major with a minor in Journalism. Her background in dance includes a wide range of styles: ballet, modern, contemporary, tap, hip hop, and flamenco. With the end of OUT OF THE BOX came an emotional “See you later” to our lovely seniors. While we are sad to see them go, we can’t wait to see what they all accomplish moving forward!

To our seniors, thank you for all you have done and for inspiring us each and everyday. You will always have a home in Embodiment. Don’t be strangers! Come back and visit your ECD Family💛
